Biology always in mind
A myriad of biological and clinical factors relative to the hard and soft tissues affects the successful restoration of crestal defects. Astute identification and analysis of these contributing factors must be addressed during the treatment planning process. A philosophy of hard tissue grafting techniques according to Khoury’s biological concept will be presented which accelerates bone transplant healing by increasing the number of regenerated and vital osteocytes in the grafted area. Several augmentation procedures, including lateral and vertical reconstruction techniques, are shown. Emphasis will be placed on soft tissue management. The use of various flap designs and soft tissue augmentation techniques can help to get appropriate hard and soft tissue engineering in all three dimensions. The presentation integrates evidence-based biological principles and clinical aspects in hard and soft tissue management to optimize long-term stability and natural esthetic outcome.
