Augmentation with the patient's own bone is today still correctly referred to as the gold standard in dental implantology. DENTSPLY Friadent supplies the FRIOS range of products, which have been specially developed for this form of augmentation. They have been in constant and successful use for many years now. The FRIOS MicroSaw is the heart of the system and is designed for use with autologous bone. It is ideally suited for preparation of bone blocks and bone flaps – fast, atraumatic and saves bone. Almost every second implant placement today involves some form of augmentation. A predictable, optimum esthetic and functional result is the goal of every procedure. Augmentation with autologous bone is the best possible method of achieving this goal. Only material taken from the patient's own body can guarantee complete biocompatibility. This eliminates the danger of undesirable side effects, rejection reactions or contamination by the transplanted material. The only material placed in the organism is material originally taken from it.

The restoration of a defect with a bone graft can be planned beforehand and precisely designed. The osteogenic properties of the autologous bone ensure optimum regeneration. Large-scale grafts, such as on the alveolar ridge, can only be done reliably by grafting a bone block. The graft and the graft site can be shaped precisely for each other. With a cutting width of only 0.25 mm the FRIOS MicroSaw provides an extremely accurate, minimally invasive osteotomy line. This means that virtually no valuable bone material is lost. The rotating protector prevents injury to the soft tissue during bone harvesting. In contrast to augmentation material from other sources that have an osteoconductive and ideally also osteoinductive effect, autologous bone has the natural capability of osteogenesis, confirmed formation of new bone.

A perfect instrument set for accurate preparation
The harvesting of autologous bone blocks requires experience and makes high demands on the final result of the treatment. The flexibility of the FRIOS MicroSaw makes vertical and horizontal osteotomy easy – even under difficult anatomical conditions. FRIOS handpiece and contra-angle handpieces are designed specifically for the FRIOS Unit S/i. With ergonomic design and the head that can rotate in 90-degree steps (FRIOS WS-75 contra-angle handpiece), the surgical site remains accessible at all times during bone preparation. The patented hexagonal clamping system ensures a smooth and continuous treatment procedure when using instruments with a hex connection. Rotary instruments cannot be blocked, which extends their service life.

The FRIOS MicroSaw with a cutting width of only 0.25 mm produces the finest osteotomy line in the world and as a result operates virtually without bone loss. Harvesting of bone blocks is done in three stages: preparation with the microsaw blade at a maximum cutting depth of 3.5 mm, perforation with the drills, luxation with the dental chisels. The rotating protector prevents injury to the soft tissue. The FRIOS MicroSaw is suitable for preparation of bone blocks and osteotomies and also preparation of bone flaps such as for apicectomy or cystectomy.
