Occlusal Compass confirms the high standard of quality in modern dental technology

The fifth Occlusal Compass, one of the leading dental technician competitions in Europe, was marked again this year with functional and esthetically high-quality dental-technical constructions. The competition is dedicated to Michael H. Polz, who developed the Occlusal Compass, one of the most useful tools for measurement and reconstruction of function in prosthetic dentistry. The three best submissions received prizes amounting to a total of 6000 euros. Andreas Rauh, the winner, praised the new indexed ANKYLOS C/X, which was used in this competition for the first time. "The new ANKYLOS /X abutment makes it easy for me as a dental technician to find the right position quickly and securely with the indexing during the manufacturing process."

The task this year was to fabricate implant-supported crowns on Balance anterior abutments in the mandible in region 41 and 31. In addition, a maximum contact position was required – as much as possible with the dynamic occlusion. A removable partial denture on implants (ANKYLOS implant system, indexed) with a tapered connection was required in the edentulous maxilla in region 15, 12, 21, 22, 24. The master cast , mounted with primary and secondary split cast, had to be submitted for testing the function with a suitable articulator. The construction was assessed for malfunctioning occlusal contacts as well as the static and dynamic occlusion. And best of all: All entries represented the high standard of modern dental technology.

The winner

• The first place and 3000 euros went to Andreas Rauh, an employee of Hardi Mink of Aldente Dentaldesign GmbH in Fellbach. His prize-winning work was noted not only for outstanding esthetics – particularly the lifelike tooth shading and incisor-edge shape and the naturally modeled and shaded gums were highly rated – but also primarily the perfectly implemented function. The prize-winning work will be presented in the next issue of our customer magazine, iDENTity 2_2009.
• Carsten Styra of the practice laboratory in the dental practice of Dres. Hild & Ebert, Soest, received second prize and 2000 euros: He received top marks for framework design and accuracy, particularly for periodontal hygiene and the design of the crown margins. Styra was also able to achieve the required lingualized occlusion in spite of the difficult antagonistic bite conditions.
• Third prize with 1000 euros was won by Janett Rehberg and Christian Thie of the Dental-Studio Dörte Thie in Blankenfelde, Berlin.
